The “No Truth” Zone

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

No Truth SymbolWell, it is official.  Our current presidential administration has publicly stated that the American public is being exposed to too much news and information.  Fox News has reported that, while addressing the graduating class of Virginia’s Hampton University, the president told the 2010 class that they were “coming of age in a 24/7 media environment that bombards us with all kinds of content and exposes us to all kinds of arguments, some of which don’t always rank that high on the truth meter.”  He further stated that, “information becomes a distraction, a diversion” and is “pressure on our country and on our democracy.”

Of course, this philosophy is nothing new.  One of Adolf Hitler’s aids, Joseph Goebbels, stated that if the state tells a big enough lie often enough, it will be believed.  He also stated that “truth is the enemy of the state.”  Lenin added, “A lie told often enough becomes truth.” Thus, in the mind of those who would enslave America, the public must not have open and free access to information and truth.

This is a dangerous position for our administration to embrace.  Such pronouncements place our country on the road that leads to the restrictive access of nations like China and North Korea.  In those countries, the people are only permitted to see and hear what the government wants them to hear.  Thus, they are easier controlled.

We must follow the biblical admonition and pray for those in authority.  Pray for their conversion.  Pray for them to become Godly men and women who lead in righteousness.

Visit to the DMZ of Korea

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Thursday, April 8th,  was a day to be remembered.  While on a trip to Seoul, Korea, my wife and I had the privilege of participating in an USO sponsored trip to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone).  What a trip!  This is the zone created by the Armistice of July 1953, in regards to the Korean War.  This was a cease-fire agreement signed by North Korea, the U.N. and the United States.  (South Korea refused to sign, because they wanted unification).  The DMZ was established as a buffer around the MDL (Military Demarcation Line), and is in the area of the 38th Parallel.  This line is the dividing line between North and South Korea.

As we begin to approach the DMZ, security was noticeably increased.  Upon arrival at the south entrance of the DMZ, the tour was taken over by the military of the JSA (Joint Security Area).  The JSA is purportedly comprised of ROK (Republic of Korea) soldiers and U.N. soldiers.  However, the “U.N.” delegation is mainly United States.

The tour continued into the heart of the DMZ.  We arrived at the MDL, and the border of the two countries.  As we entered the main building, we were brief on what would happen after we exited the rear of the building.  Upon exiting, we would be able to see across the border into North Korea.  We were warned to stay with the group, and not to attempt any communication with the North Korean guards, either verbal or non-verbal.  Any gestures could be considered a threat by the NK.

As warned, we were heavily watched by the N.K. guards.  Although they were a distance of about two-hundred yards away, it was clear that they were monitoring our movements.  We were escorted by armed soldiers into the “Conference Building.”  This is a small one-room building that is in the rear of the main building.  This building is perfectly divided between North and South Korea.  The border runs directly through the middle of the building, with an exit on both ends.  The purpose of this arrangement was so that both countries could set at the negotiating table and still remain in their country.  Prior to entering this building, armed guards insured the North Korea exit door was secure.  A ROK soldier was then posted at the door to insure no one accidentally opened the door into N.K..  While in the building, we were permitted to cross the line into North Korea.  Although it was within a building, it was still North Korea.

Upon exiting the building (on the Republic of Korea side), I gazed into the country of North Korea.  Even the landscape and terrain revealed the despair of this country that is shrouded in darkness.  One man, a ruthless dictator, has established a country that lives in physical and spiritual darkness.  He has completely isolated his people from the outside world.  They are not permitted to know what the rest of the world does.  He has kept the people of North Korea from hearing the message of hope that is offered by Jesus Christ.  As I thought upon these things, I could not help but weep.  Millions of souls are perishing, due to the iron-fisted rule of Kim Jung IL.

Pray for the Lord to open the door into North Korea, so that the light of the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ may be given to those in that country.

An Open Letter to Congress

Monday, December 21st, 2009

healthcareThe following is a copy of a letter that a good friend of mine sent to his congressional representative.  It is with his permission that I post this letter.  He makes a very valid and poignant point!

An Open Letter to Congress

The U. S. Postal Service was established in 1775 – you have had 234 years to get it right; it is broke.

Social Security was established in 1935 – you have had 74 years to get it right; it is broke.

Fannie Mae was established in 1938 – you have had 71 years to get it right: it is broke.

The “War on Poverty” started in 1964 – you have had 45 years to get it right: $1 trillion of our money is confiscated each year and transferred to “the poor’; it hasn’t worked and our entire country is broke.

Medicare and Medicaid were established in 1965 – you have had 44 years to get it right; it is broke.

Freddie Mac was established in 1970 – you have had 39 years to get it right; it is broke.

Trillions of dollars were spent in the massive political payoffs called TARP, the “Stimulus” the Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009…none show any signs of working, although ACORN appears to have a new source; the American taxpayer.

Finally, to set a new record: “Cash for Clunkers” was established in 2009 and went broke in 2009! It took cars (that were the best some people could afford) and replaced them with high-priced and less-affordable cars, mostly Japanese. A good percentage of the profits went out of the country. And the American taxpayers take the hit for Congress’ generosity in burning three billion more of our dollars on failed experiments.

So with a perfect 100% failure rate and a record that proves that the “services” you shove down our throats are failing faster and faster, you want Americans to believe you can be trusted with a government-run health care system?  (That is) 20% of our entire economy?

With all due respect, are you crazy?

A Cartoon With a Real Truth for America

Here is a YouTube video that seemed like far-fetched fantasy in 1948.  Yet, its message is very relevant for Americans today.

The Danger of Education Without the Bible

Saturday, October 17th, 2009
Martin Luther

Martin Luther

Although there would be a great number of points with which we would disagree with Martin Luther, the 16th century reformer, his observation concerning education is accurate.  In the book, “One Nation Under God,”* author David Gibbs quotes Luther as stating, “I am much afraid that schools will prove to be great gates of hell unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures, engraving them in the hearts of youth. I advise no one to place his child where the Scriptures do not reign paramount” (emphasis added).

How true it is that no education is complete, when that education leaves the Word of God outside of the classroom.  Since God Himself is Truth, then it stands to reason, that educational truth must include Him.  Any student that has been awarded a diploma, and that diploma does not represent any biblical teaching, is woefully ill-equipped to face the world.  That student may well have skills that allow for corporate success and financial prowess.  However, that student’s worldview is skewed in favor of the world and he will not examine each decision under the light of God’s Word.

There will be come who argue that the church and home are the place for religious instruction.  Yet, such philosophy reveals the misconception that one’s life should be divided into two parts. . .the secular and the sacred.  A.W. Tozer, in his book The Pursuit of God stated that such philosophy is one of the most dangerous concepts in modern Christianity.  Bob Jones, Sr. stated that, for the Christian, nothing is secular but everything is sacred.  This is consistent with the biblical teaching that, at salvation, God bought the believer (cf. I Corinthians 6:19-20).  The believer has no life outside that of living for Christ.  Anything less is sin.

Let us pray for a return of biblical principles to our nations government and educational systems.

Church Closings

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Church TowerThe following articles is from an e-mail I received from www.fundamentaltop500.com. This is a sad commentary on the church of our day. When I came to Columbus, GA ten years ago, there were no Islamic Centers in the city. Since then, two independent, fundamental Baptist churches have shut their doors, and two Islamic Centers have been established. However, we need not despair! God is still King and on His Throne. Let us all commit ourselves to fulfilling the Great Commission and get the gospel into all the world.

Here is the article. . .

As I was visiting Wednesday, I was struck by the number of old church buildings I passed. A generation or two ago, these were spirit-filled country churches. Today they are Grange halls, thrift shops, and apartments.

It was sad. It was like driving through a graveyard.

These bygone churches reminded me of a passage from a book I had read:

While the country churches are the stronghold of the evangelizing and missionary enterprises of the Church at home and abroad there are alarming conditions of weakness in many country churches. … there were in Maine at that time 282 pastorless churches in farming districts and some of the deserted churches were then serving as cheese factories, dance halls, and road houses. The Day of the Country Church, by James Oliver Ashenhurst

This book was written in 1908! How much worse is our condition now?

Last year, I read that churches in America are closing at a rate of 3,000 per year. Massachusetts — the very state where our pilgrim fore-fathers landed — now rates fourth from the bottom in belief in God according to a 2009 survey. Right below Massachusetts is my own state of Maine.

Following is Gallup’s entire list of states, in order of what percentage of respondents said religion is “an important part” of their daily lives:

* Mississippi: 85%
* Alabama: 82%
* South Carolina: 80%
* Tennessee: 79%

* Missouri: 68%
* Virginia: 68%
* South Dakota: 68%
* North Dakota: 68%
* Indiana: 68%

Where will we be in our children’s time?

Where are the preachers who will give up hope of wealth and fame to serve in little country churches, bringing our nation back to God one soul, one community at a time?

Where are the missionaries to America, a nation rapidly becoming a pagam land?

We can give up an say, “well, we’re in the end times. It’s just gonna be like this.” Or we can rise up and fight back against the dark tide sweeping our nation.

One day after big storm, a man walked out on the beach and saw thousands of starfish washed up and dying on the sand. A boy was picking them up one-by-one and tossing them back into the water. The man said, “What are you doing, son?” The boy replied, “saving the starfish.” The man chuckled at the boy’s ignorance and said, “There’s no way you can save all those starfish — there are too many of them.” The boy picked up another one and tossed it out into the waves. “There’s one more.”

Maybe we can’t save them all. Maybe this country will never turn back to Christ. But, if we try, we can save “one more.”

Why Not Ignore the Constitution?

Friday, March 6th, 2009

It seems that every day, the news is reporting another action of our politicians that appears to ignore our Constitutional boundaries. The biggest flap is concerning the qualification of Obama to be President. Until this point, there has been no Certificate of Live Birth (COLB) produced to verify that he is a natural-born citizen of the United States, as required by our Constitution.  Of course, there are many who are angry over his consistent refusal to address the situation and produce a COLB.  (It seems that, if he were natural born, the common sense thing to do would be to produce the COLB and end the debate. That should be a no-brainer).

Anyway, that issue and many other have spawned a national discussion over the Constitution. Citizens should be alarmed and angry that the founding document seems to no longer matter.  It should distress the nation that our guiding document is ignored and no one can seem to stop the ignoring of it.

However, I would like to surmise that we should not be surprised. It should not be a cause for amazement that politicians simply ignore the portions of the Constitution that they find disagreeable or unpleasant. After all. . .Is that not what people do with God’s Word?

We have sown the seeds for this ignoring of the U.S. Constitution. When our nation declared that the Bible, the Word of God, was no longer applicable to our governance, then we planted seeds that are now bearing fruit. If a man has no regard for the most sacred document of all history (i.e., the Bible), then is it any wonder that lesser documents can be ignored or disposed of at will?

Yes, we should insist upon being governed by our nation’s founding document.  We must demand that Constitutional boundaries be adhered to.  Yet, we must remain prayerful for our nation’s leaders.  Our prayer must be that they come to salvation and begin to love God’s Word.  When they respect God’s Word, only then will the Constitution will be restored to its rightful authority.

The End of a Nation

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Normally, I do not simply post a quote.  However, there is little more that could be added to this poignant thought.  It is a quote from a sermon by Dr. Adrian Rogers.   It is certainly worth reading and praying that our national leaders understand its truth!

“You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.”

(The late Dr. Adrian Rogers, 1931 – 2005)

It’s Not Fair!

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

It's Not Fair!

The past few weeks have often presented a discussion on the issue of fairness.  Too many people have the idea that all should be “fair.”  As a pastor, I see this played out in parent and child roles quite often.  The parent thinks they are teaching their child a good thing when they teach “fairness.”  They seem to think that this is a biblical idea.

What are we teaching a child, when we teach them that life is all about fairness.  Although, we should always seek to treat others fairly, is it not true that the idea of fairness is rather subjective?  What is fair to one person, may not seem fair to another.  When a child screams, “That’s not fair,” what is he saying?  He is saying that he was mistreated by someone else.  In other words, his idea of fairness is a self-centered idea.  Thus, when we teach children that life is to be fair, we are teaching them to be self-centered and selfish.

Does the idea of “fairness” come from the biblical text?  Of course, there is the proverbial “Golden Rule” found in Matthew 7:12, “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.”  However, this verse is not about being “fair.”  Taken in its context, it is the portion of the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus is addressing how He answers prayer.  He compares His graciousness and goodness toward us, with our graciousness and goodness toward others (Matt. 7:7-11).  Then, verse 12 begins with the word, “Therefore,” which means “based upon what has just been said.”  The conclusion of verse 12 is a statement that we treat others in the way we want to be treated by them.

One is hard-pressed to find a biblical stance on the issue of “fairness” in the Scriptures.  In fact, it can be found otherwise.  For instance, was it “fair” that God rejected hard-working and manly Esau, and accepted the soft, sissy Jacob?  Was it “fair” that all of Achan’s household was stoned to death with him for his actions?  Was it fair that thirty-six innocent soldier’s lost their lives, due to Achan’s sin?  Was it “fair” that over a million people were condemned to wandering in the wilderness for forty years, because of the disbelief of ten men who brough back an evil report?  Was it “fair” that God sent Abraham’s descendants into Egyptian bondage for four-hundred years when, as yet, they had not done anything wicked (Gen. 15:14; cf. Acts 7:6)?  There are scores of other biblical examples that could be used to demonstrate that God is not interested in what mankind calls “fair.”

However, the Scriptures are abundant with references on life being holy, righteous, just and godly.  It is God’s concern that we live holy and rightouse lives.  It is about individual responsibility toward Christ.  If we are living that kind of life, then our actions toward others will also be with the right motivation.  Fairness will not be the concern, but what is godly will be.

How does this play out in our society?  The warped idea of fairness has spawned an abundance of ungodly legislation in our country.  The basic idea is. . .”It’s not fair, if homosexual couples cannot marry like the heterosexual couple can.”   However, society should not feel any compulsion to adhere to their definition of “fairness.”  Rather, we should follow the bilical admonition of finding such a lifestyle to be an “abomination” (Lev. 18:22).  Our laws should reflect righteousness.  Of course, someone will then say, “It’s not fair to enforce your biblical viewpoint on others.”  Again, the issue of fairness is raised, because someone has felt slighted or mistreated (i.e., it is self-centered).  Yet, it has been historically proven that societies cannot infinitely survive when they have been destitue of the righteous standard.

Another issue of ill-perceived fairness in our country is the economy.  Our leaders seem determined to embrace socialism.  This is based on the idea that it is not “fair” that one person should have more than another.  It is not fair for whom?  Oh, I see, again it is a self-centered philosophy.  Righteousness and justice would mandate that people who choose not to seize the opportunities afforded them, would have to learn to live without as much.  Of course, someone is now saying, “But it is not fair if they do not have the opportunity, and that is why we need these laws.”  Please note that legislation cannot create opportunities.  Opportunities come to those who give themselves to learning and work.  The more you know and work, the more the opportunities arise.  This is what is known as cause and effect!.

So, let’s just be righteous and godly, and then our lives will be fair before God.

The Saddleback Sadness

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

As you may have heard, Rick Warren hosted a “forum” for discussion between the two presidential contenders, McCain and Obama.  What a sad state that Warren would degrade his platform to be a host for men who spurn God’s Word and will not take a firm stand for truth.  Warren’s place would be better named “Saddleback Community Club” rather than “church.”  A church is to be known as the “pillar and ground of the truth” (First Timothy 3:15c).  It is to be a stalwart of biblical faith and never a battleground for politicians.  It is to promote truth, and truth is absolute and fixed.  A genuine church will never promote the idea that truth is fluid and unfixed.  Warren has again communicated a false idea of truth and the church.  A sad day indeed.
